Awnings are cheaper, but can be a real pain. First look for the type that does not have the side arms because believe me people walk into them, but that limits the span of the coverage. Building a permanent cover requires some maintenance depending on what type you build. Ours needs to be painted every few years and we live in termite country so we watch for wood rot and moisture damage making certain to treat it right away to discourage them. But, you can get away with power washing the permanent structure which is a disaster with an awning. We had to take ours down, spread it out on the driveway and wash it now and again because it got grungy looking and even though the company told us it would not mildew, leaves stain it and water discolored it and it started to fade after 5-6 years. I'm a lot happier with the permanent structure, it cost abut $1500 to build and the awning was smaller and cost around $1000
References :
one suggestion would be to put up a purgola type structure above the deck
this would cut down on the direct sunlight, but would still allow for air flow
any fully enclosed structure, either awning or solid roof would trap hot air and could become uncomfortable
